ThemeShaper Forums Tag: appearance http://forums.themeshaper.com/ Help In Shaping WordPress Themes en Sat, 23 May 2015 04:11:55 +0000 fingersoccer on "Appearance > Menu not showing up!" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/appearance-gt-menu-not-showing-up#post-17649 Thu, 09 Dec 2010 16:30:20 +0000 fingersoccer 17649@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
So I've set up a WordPress site using the Thematic framework and it's been going great for a few months now. But today I logged in and went to Appearance > Menus to change the nav menu, and I got a blank page. I tried refreshing and using a different browser to no avail. All the other Admin links work as expected.

I checked the page source and all of the header information is intact, the CSS links, meta information, javascripts, etc., but it stop before the closing head tag and there's nothing else after that.

I was thinking that it might help if I replaced the nav-menu.php file, but it didn't have any effect. Any ideas what could be going on?
mo on "change 'previous_post_link' appearance by filter not working" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/change-previous_post_link-appearance-by-filter-not-working#post-16220 Tue, 12 Oct 2010 11:49:00 +0000 mo 16220@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
Ouh!
It was the new ‹Thematic› version I didn't update to… now it works like a charm! Thanks for that little hint…
I have got another little problem with separators for category list… perhaps you got any tips there, too?

I know it's off-topic but here is the CSS I used for the separators:

.widget_categories li{
display: inline;
font-style: normal;
font-weight:normal;
font-size:10px;
line-height:15px;
text-transform:none;
}

.widget_categories li:after{
content: " | ";
}

.widget_categories li:last-of-type:after{
content: none;
}

This CSS solution works fine in Firefox but does (for some strange reason) not work in Safari. For the tags-widget I used php to create the separators but I'm not quite sure how this would work for the cats.
Here's my code for the tag-separators:

// configure Tag-Cloud
function my_tag_cloud($defaults) {
$args = array(
'smallest' => 7, 'largest' => 7, 'unit' => 'pt', 'number' => 25,
'format' => 'flat', 'separator' => " | ", 'orderby' => 'name', 'order' => 'ASC',
'exclude' => '', 'include' => '', 'link' => 'view', 'taxonomy' => 'post_tag', 'echo' => true
);
$args = wp_parse_args( $args, $defaults );
$tags = get_terms( $args['taxonomy'], array_merge( $args, array( 'orderby' => 'count', 'order' => 'DESC' ) ) ); // Always query top tags

if ( empty( $tags ) )
return;

foreach ( $tags as $key => $tag ) {
if ( 'edit' == $args['link'] )
$link = get_edit_tag_link( $tag->term_id, $args['taxonomy'] );
else
$link = get_term_link( intval($tag->term_id), $args['taxonomy'] );
if ( is_wp_error( $link ) )
return false;

$tags[ $key ]->link = $link;
$tags[ $key ]->id = $tag->term_id;
}

$return = wp_generate_tag_cloud( $tags, $args ); // Here's where those top tags get sorted according to $args

$return = apply_filters( 'my_tag_cloud', $return, $args );

if ( 'array' == $args['format'] || empty($args['echo']) )
return $return;

echo $return;
}

Jose on "change 'previous_post_link' appearance by filter not working" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/change-previous_post_link-appearance-by-filter-not-working#post-16218 Tue, 12 Oct 2010 10:41:07 +0000 Jose 16218@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
Hm strange i tried that one before posting it and worked for me, looking at thematic code, if you declare
childtheme_override_previous_post_link()
, it should use it instead of the original one.

To test if something is blocking the code rename the functions file and create a clean one with just that to see if it works. If it works copy and paste stuff from the old functions one function at a time to find the problem.

Also the method i mentioned i tested only on latest thematic version, 0.9.7.6, make sure you have that but be aware that updating to it can reset some widget or break your main menu a bit like explained here: http://developing.thematic4you.com/2010/04/breaking-things-to-fix-others/
mo on "change 'previous_post_link' appearance by filter not working" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/change-previous_post_link-appearance-by-filter-not-working#post-16217 Tue, 12 Oct 2010 10:21:49 +0000 mo 16217@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
I could post my complete ‹functions.php› if that helps…
mo on "change 'previous_post_link' appearance by filter not working" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/change-previous_post_link-appearance-by-filter-not-working#post-16216 Tue, 12 Oct 2010 09:18:13 +0000 mo 16216@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
Hi Jose, thanks for your approach!

You just changed the ‹function childtheme_prev_post_link()› to ‹function childtheme_override_previous_post_link()› right?

But that unfortunately this is still not working. I have a somehow strange problem… I just wanted to change the appearance of the next & previous post-links. I tried for some time now bit it simply is not working…

I looked up the source code and tryed to build a filter. I'm not that good at filtering php stuff so here is my code:

function childtheme_prev_post_link() { $args = array ('format' => '%link', 'link' => '<span class="meta-nav">MMM</span> %title', 'in_same_cat' => FALSE, 'excluded_categories' => ''); $args = apply_filters('childtheme_prev_post_link_args', $args ); previous_post_link($args['format'], $args['link'], $args['in_same_cat'], $args['excluded_categories']); } // end thematic_previous_post_link add_filter('thematic_previous_post_link','childtheme_prev_post_link');

I don't even know if I did that right… The three MMM are just for testing purposes. I just wanted to change or remove the basic « symbol.

Help would be very much appreciated!
PitaMaria on "theme locations, menus not being saved" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/theme-locations-menus-not-being-saved#post-15714 Mon, 20 Sep 2010 20:03:08 +0000 PitaMaria 15714@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
Thanks, Gene. It's hard to say.

If the site content is relatively static you could use a caching plugin and force the cached view while you observe the non-cached version site for changes.

Look around the forums and documentation here. That should speak for itself on the community around the Thematic theme family.

My 2cents... With a community forum like this one you get out of what you invest in it. The more time you look around the more tips and answers you may find you never knew you needed. And the more you help others, the more familiar you'll become with the framework and WordPress in the process.

Should you start using it as your framework of choice, this is definitely the place to come with questions and answers.

Cheers,
Gene
PitaMaria on "theme locations, menus not being saved" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/theme-locations-menus-not-being-saved#post-15705 Mon, 20 Sep 2010 16:09:53 +0000 PitaMaria 15705@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
Yeah, I've had the same question posted concurrently in the WP Forum and got lucky with some response activity. Folks seem to think it's a plugin issue. Troubleshooting is tough because the issue is unpredictable: it's only happened once since the site's been launched, and I'll never know if it's gonna happen again.

The function:
register_nav_menu('secondary', 'Secondary Navigation');

Anyway, I'm sticking with Thematic for now on. The layout on the HOME page of my blog differs from that of the BOOKS page.. (i.e. the sidebars are not visible on the BOOKS page.
