So I filtered the category from the main index as Chris described here:

http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/filtering-one-category-from-index-loop

'
//Remove news category from blog page to avoid double posting
function no_news_in_loop() {
//test if we are on the blog page
if(is_home())

{
global $query_string;
query_posts('cat=-3');
}
}
add_action('thematic_indexloop', 'no_news_in_loop');
'

It works great, almost. It causes my pagination links to stop working. They load the appropriate page, i.e. blog/page/2/ and blog/page/3/, but the posts on every page are the same.

I'm hoping there's a quick and easy fix for it? I just can't seem to locate one.

I suppose I should also mention that I've put the news category posts on their own page by copying page.php, renaming in to page-news.php, and creating a page template with it. I then filter the index loop on that page with this function:

'
//filter news category posts to only show on news page template

function news_in_loop () {
if(is_page_template('page-news.php'))

{
query_posts( $query_string . "&cat=26");
}
}

add_action('thematic_indexloop', 'news_in_loop');
'

This also works as needed, except for the same pagination issue.

Thanks for your help.
ash.matadeen on "How to display posts from categories on pages using a second loop" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/how-to-display-posts-from-categories-on-pages-using-a-second-loop#post-20238 Sat, 02 Apr 2011 13:25:37 +0000 ash.matadeen 20238@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
Just in case anyone wants to refer to the page name and category name rather than the number:

if (is_page(pagename)) {
query_posts('category_name=categoryname&showposts=10');
thematic_index_loop();
}

Simply replace pagename and categoryname with your own.
JeffPeppers on "How to display posts from categories on pages using a second loop" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/how-to-display-posts-from-categories-on-pages-using-a-second-loop#post-19996 Sat, 26 Mar 2011 03:08:09 +0000 JeffPeppers 19996@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
this is what is in my functions.php now (and thank you for the help!):

//
// Separate Cat to Page + Working Nav w/ Default
//
function childtheme_second_loop() {

$paged = (get_query_var('paged')) ? get_query_var('paged') : 1;

if (is_page(509)) {
query_posts("cat=25&showposts=4&paged=" . $paged);
thematic_index_loop();
thematic_navigation_below();
} elseif (is_page(507)) {
query_posts("cat=24&showposts=4&paged=" . $paged);
thematic_index_loop();
thematic_navigation_below();
} else {
return;
}
}
add_action('thematic_abovepagebottom', 'childtheme_second_loop' );

helgatheviking on "How to display posts from categories on pages using a second loop" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/how-to-display-posts-from-categories-on-pages-using-a-second-loop#post-19713 Mon, 14 Mar 2011 16:46:12 +0000 helgatheviking 19713@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
while this is perhaps not in line w/ the original topic (well not completely anyway) for everyone wanting to put loops of things outside of the normal loop please read:

codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/get_posts

there is a nice working example at the bottom and you can hack away from there and never worry about monkeying w/ your actual query.
vamban on "How to display posts from categories on pages using a second loop" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/how-to-display-posts-from-categories-on-pages-using-a-second-loop#post-19712 Mon, 14 Mar 2011 15:00:15 +0000 vamban 19712@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
How do i show the corresponding post thumbnails for each post?
khester on "Pages/Categories navigation" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/pagescategories-navigation#post-18856 Mon, 31 Jan 2011 21:30:36 +0000 khester 18856@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
Hello everyone. If so, how would I tell the index loop to use that template if the Careers category has been chosen?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance
moncho on "Use the Categories Menu global" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/use-the-categories-menu-global#post-18385 Sat, 15 Jan 2011 00:54:47 +0000 moncho 18385@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
hi! in this moment i found the thread ;-)

but im not verry a coder so i have got some trouble yet with integrating the code.....

can you help me a bit? this is my functions.php from the child theme (powerblog) where i have to put your source when i unterstand it right. but i dont know exactly where....

`<?php

// Load Child Theme scripts
// http://www.cssnewbie.com/example/equal-heights/
function childtheme_scripts() { ?>
<script type="text/javascript">
jQuery.noConflict();
function equalHeight(group) {
tallest = 0;
group.each(function() {
thisHeight = jQuery(this).height();
if(thisHeight > tallest) {
tallest = thisHeight;
}
});
group.height(tallest);
}
jQuery(document).ready(function() {
equalHeight(jQuery(".main-aside"));
});
</script>

<?php }
add_action('wp_head','childtheme_scripts');

// Adds a home link to your menu
// http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/wp_page_menu
function childtheme_menu_args($args) {
$args = array(
'show_home' => 'Home',
'sort_column' => 'menu_order',
'menu_class' => 'menu',
'echo' => true
);
return $args;
}
add_filter('wp_page_menu_args','childtheme_menu_args');

// Add a drop down category menu
function childtheme_category_menu() { ?>
<div id="category-access">
<div id="category-menu" class="menu">
<div class="menu-title"><?php _e('Categories:', 'thematic'); ?></div>
<ul id="category-nav" class="sf-menu">
<?php wp_list_categories('title_li='); ?>

</div>
</div>
<?php }
add_action('thematic_belowheader','childtheme_category_menu', 5);

// Add a widgetized aside just below the header
function childtheme_leaderasides() { ?>

<?php if ( is_sidebar_active('1st-leader-aside') || is_sidebar_active('2nd-leader-aside') || is_sidebar_active('3rd-leader-aside') ) { // one of the leader asides has a widget ?>
<div id="leader">
<div id="leader-container">

<?php if ( function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') && is_sidebar_active('1st-leader-aside') ) { // there are active widgets for this aside
echo '<div id="first-leader" class="aside sub-aside">'.
