By doing a child theme function override, I see now that it means once you've changed the bit you wanted, you still have to re-instruct it on what to do with everything else (the ELSE part you allude to).

I had that working thanks to a copy/paste from the content-extensions.php (minus the thematic_postfooter declaration and with minor editing), but it all seemed rather clunky. I figured there must be a better way. However that was not a waste of time because I learned things along the way.

So your name, "kia_postfooter" is this an arbitrary name, or is an essential defined name? In other words, could it just as easily been named "myspecialfilter_postfooter" ?

I think I may have figured out how to do remove the link from from the post title as well, but in light of the above, I will take another look because it also seemed a bit clunky.

Many thanks. I figured out how to get rid of the postfooter (the comments, tags, edit link). Unfortunately, my if statement doesn't seem to be working, as it's removed the postfooter on every single post. This is my code:

// here were are in the post footer function childtheme_override_postfooter() { //this bit is supposed to remove the post footer from the sticky post only if (is_sticky()) { $postfooter = '<!-- sticky post has no postfooter -->'; // and this part applies it return apply_filters('thematic_postfooter',$postfooter); } }

It seems to be overriding all postfooter instructions, regardless of sticky or not. I thought at first that it meant I need to re-instruct it as to what to do with the non-sticky, and pasted in the original thematic_postfooter instructions, but that gave me a "can't re-declare function thematic_postfooter" type of error message.

help?

On a sidenote, I think I figured out why it's apply_filters as opposed to add_filter. But I don't think I could explain to others just yet...
onelittlemoose on "how to remove meta data, comments etc from a sticky post?" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/how-to-remove-meta-data-comments-etc-from-a-sticky-post#post-23884 Mon, 21 Nov 2011 19:39:41 +0000 onelittlemoose 23884@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
Ok, I think I might be on to something here. I really like your parking analogy, and after resisting the urge to run away screaming from the code, I've spent some time on your tutorial and managed to hobble together something. Unfortunately my results are not very good...

First, the code I tried, starting with baby steps and trying to remove the postmeta:

function childtheme_override_postheader_postmeta($postmeta) { if (is_sticky()) { $c[] = 's-sticky'; $postmeta = ''; } return apply_filters('thematic_postheader_postmeta',$postmeta); }

This gives error:
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare childtheme_override_postheader_postmeta() (previously declared in /functions.php:54) in /functions.php on line 103

Oopsie, I had previously asked it to remove the author bits on regular posts. So at first glance, initially, that's the cause of the error. But, are my logic and syntax even on the right track? Should my "if" part come before the function part, or should my "if" be added to the previous filter that removed the author part? Sadly, when the client upgraded his WP installation to WordPress 3.2.1, suddenly the function is throwing duplicate info.

Please reference the 3.1.3 installation at http://seacliffmm.com/prod/centurion/category/clients-testimonials/, and the 3.2.1 installation at http://centurionlists.com/category/clients-testimonials/, for reference.

The post-meta purpose is to add specific marketing info beneath posted testimonials by client companies. Each post includes custom fields SPONSOR and SPONSORLINK. The function code is as follows:

// ADD optional content when available function add_after_content($content) { global $post; $sponsortext = get_post_meta($post->ID , 'sponsor', true); $sponsorlink = get_post_meta($post->ID , 'sponsorlink', true); if($sponsortext && $sponsorlink){ $sponsor = '<div id="sponsor">'; $sponsor .= ''.$sponsortext.' '; $sponsor .= 'For more information visit the website, <a href="http://'.$sponsorlink.'" target="_blank">http://'.$sponsorlink.'</a> '; $sponsor .= '</div>'; $content .= $sponsor ; } return $content; } add_filter('the_content', add_after_content); //

As you can see, in the WP 3.1.3, it works just fine. In the WP 3.2.1 installation, each post shows the SPONSOR and SPONSORLINK info twice: the first instance appears to be the correct info; the second would appear to be the first/sticky post's SPONSOR and SPONSORLINK info repeated under every post.

Could something in the new version's "Make Sticky" function be causing the repeat, or might it be something in the actual function code that is now broken according to the new WP version? Or other?

UPDATE: I tried the simple solution of removing the "make sticky" designator from that one post. It didn't help a thing, so the "Make Sticky" function is not the culpret. The repeating info all comes from the first post made.

Any help/ideas would be appreaciated.
lance1572 on "Adding a widget inside a div to the Homepage Only" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/adding-a-widget-inside-a-div-to-the-homepage-only#post-22110 Thu, 30 Jun 2011 19:07:19 +0000 lance1572 22110@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
Oh! I apologize if this has been answered.

When you create these areas, how do you get the ability to print out in a specific area in the code?

Example: I've added a new area (news-extra-content) and want to be placed after container - so I used thematic_belowcontainer which is great but how do I control where it gets placed in the html? Right now it gets printed above the secondary, primary, and tertiary. I'd like for it to get printed after the primary, secondary, and tertiary.

<div id="main">
<div id="container">
</div>
<div id="news-extra-content"> </div>
<div id="primary" class="aside main-aside">
</div>
<div id="secondary" class="aside main-aside">
</div>
<div id="tertiary"> </div>
lance1572 on "Adding a widget inside a div to the Homepage Only" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/adding-a-widget-inside-a-div-to-the-homepage-only#post-22101 Thu, 30 Jun 2011 18:15:22 +0000 lance1572 22101@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
I'm creating a homepage with 4 new cols like the subsidiary cols but only on the homepage. I'm using the subs now and that is why I have created new areas.

I've got everything working good and the site is loading super fast. Previously, I was on a test box and the install was a couple of directories down.

:)
kinybird on "Should I use thematic? or simply adapt twentyten to my needs?" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/should-i-use-thematic-or-simply-adapt-twentyten-to-my-needs#post-21661 Mon, 06 Jun 2011 02:25:41 +0000 kinybird 21661@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
I am a newbie at customizing WordPress themes. I designed a website for a gallery and I just wanted to add an event calendar plugin in the home page and an image gallery in another page.

I don't need the blogging stuff. I was trying to adapt my html code because I wanted it to be just as the one that I designed but I am getting really nervous about having to insert html code using functions.php because I think I'm modifying it too much. Also I commented some sections in the index.php(home.php) to get rid of the comments and loops.

I don't know if this is the best option for me or if I'm following good practices. I am starting to think that thematic its too much for my needs right now.

What do you think??
riff062885 on "Conditional Tag to display full screen on Home page" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/conditional-tag-to-display-full-screen-on-home-page#post-21631 Sat, 04 Jun 2011 02:21:04 +0000 riff062885 21631@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
I could have sworn thats what I did. Obviously not because it's working exactly like it should now! Also, thanks for the tip on the wp_enqueue_script. I got that working too. Your responses are ALWAYS top notch! Thank you so much!
helgatheviking on "Conditional Tag to display full screen on Home page" http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/conditional-tag-to-display-full-screen-on-home-page#post-21625 Fri, 03 Jun 2011 15:48:23 +0000 helgatheviking 21625@http://forums.themeshaper.com/
you can't put the add_action in a conditional tag, you use the conditional tag to wrap the part of the function you want to display conditionally.

function childtheme_favicon() { if(is_home()){ ?> <script type="text/javascript"> //script stuff here </script> <?php } } add_action('wp_head', 'childtheme_favicon');

though if your home page is actually a static page then you'd need to use is_front_page() as your conditional b/c is_home() tests for your blog page and imo should actually be called is_blog() but isn't

additionally i would use wp_enqueue_script to load the supersize.js look it up in the codex
