  1. Hi

I've just started a blog using wordpress on a hosted server and following a recommendation from: http://www.bestwpthemes.com/#top10, decided to download thematic and sugar cane. When uploading the directory structure for thematic my file manager advised that the the style and functions.php files within the 'theaticsamplechildtheme' folder already existed in the server directory and did I want to overwrite. I decided not to overwrite. I then uploaded sugar cane.

Thematic appears in the 'appearance' panel of my wp-admin dashboard but wordpress advises that sugar cane was incomplete and has a missing template. I checked the folder for sugar cane and it only has two files in there: functions.php and style.

When I went to activate thematic all I got was a blank white page. When I try visit my site I get this message:

Warning: require_once(/home/wuwutshi/public_html/wp-content/themes/Thematic/library/extensions/theme-options.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/wuwutshi/public_html/wp-content/themes/Thematic/functions.php on line 35

    Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/home/wuwutshi/public_html/wp-content/themes/Thematic/library/extensions/theme-options.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/wuwutshi/public_html/wp-content/themes/Thematic/functions.php on line 35

Additionally, since this I can no longer access either my site via the URL or wp-admin. In order to re-access my site I had to delete the entire directory structure for thematic from my hosted server. Can anyone shed any light on what's going wrong?

Thanks in advance for any support you can offer.

  2. Hi,

sorry .. could be a lot of things:

    - missing files
    - missing access rights
    - ...

Could you please copy Thematic and Sugar Cane to your host without activating one of the themes and drop me a note, if done?!

  3. Hi Chris

Thanks for your response. I've done as you suggested but please be aware that I renamed both the functions.php and style file within the 'thematicsamplechildtheme' folder to functions1.php and style1 just to ensure that my server would recognise them as different files and not request I overwrite. I don't know if this will have any adverse effect but I can see that they are clearly very different files as the differ in the file size to those other files of the same name that are within the bunch of loose files which are not in the library or thematicsamplechildtheme folders.

I've also again uploaded Sugar Cane to my server. Please advise what you suggest I need do.

  5. Could you please check, if Thematic/library/layouts/3c-r-fixed.css is existing on your host?!

I can access Thematic/style.css .. there's no access to all files in the subdirectories below Thematic.

  6. Hi Chris

    Yes it is.

What is interesting is I uploaded 63 files from the Thematic directory, but there's 91 within that folder on my server. Is this right. I'm a novice so forgive me if I'm missing something but logic says you can get out what you put in??

    Posted 4 years ago #
  7. Sorry, I should say 92.

    Posted 4 years ago #
  8. Still need to check for the number of files.

Could you please check the file attributes for the files in the subdirectories below the thematic directory? .. should be at least 644.

    Chris

  9. .. and subdirectories below the thematic directory should be 755.

    Posted 4 years ago #
  10. Certainly Chris....but how do I do it???

    Posted 4 years ago #
  11. By checking out the documentation of your FTP application. Look for “chmod” or “permissions”. By the way, which one do you use?

  12. Hi Manuel

Thanks for your help. I'm using the file manager in Cpanel to upload files to my hosted server (JustHost.com). I believe the other FTP applications available are cuteFTP, WS_FTP and FileZilla but I haven't got so far as to learn how to use them yet.

Anyway, I initially downloaded both Thematic 0.9.5.1 zip and Sugar Cane files then uploaded them to my server via the file manager in my Cpanel. After doing so, they then appeared within the Wordpress 'appearance' section of my WP Dashboard but would not render when activitating them. All I got was white space.

I've checked the current 'permissions' settings for both the Thematic and Sugar Cane folders, which are currently located within the wp-content directory on my hosting server, and they are both showing as 755. Is this what Chris was referring to earlier? There's no way that I can physically count the files that I can see or am I completely misinterpreting Chris's earlier instructions and what's required?

Ultimately, I'm trying to download Thematic and Sugar Cane to use with my Wordpress blog, with a view to learning the long term benefits of both Wordpress and the Thematic framework along the way.

I hope this makes sense to you. I'm sorry if any of this appears elementary but I'm on a very steep, but interesting learning curve at the moment so please bear with me.

    Thanks
    Russell

  13. Ok, thanks for the info. I am not sure, but uploading via the Cpanel might be the culprit here (just because it sounds weird to use Cpanel for such a task).

I would suggest the following. Delete your Thematic and Sugar Cane folders from within your /wp-content/themes/ folder and go to http://bravenewtruths.com/wp-admin/theme-install.php and search for Thematic. Click install. Then activate it and report back here.

    Thanks for the swift reply.

I can get into http://bravenewtruths.com/wp-admin/ but can not access the theme-install.php directory. Clicking on the full URL returns an error page:

    Not Found

The requested URL /wp-admin/theme-install.php was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    Apache/2.0.63 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.0.63 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 Server at bravenewtruths.com Port 80

What do you suggest I do next? Please advise.

  15. I downloaded Thematic originally from this link:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/thematic

And Sugar Cane from this link: http://ableparris.com/2009/03/15/sugar-cane-a-sweet-wordpress-child-theme/

  16. I downloaded both as Winzip files then uploaded them to my server via the file manager in Cpanel. I alread have both files on my hard drive. I can remove both of these from within my /wp-content/themes/ folder in my public_html directory on my server. Is this what you are advising? So, if so what alternative method do I need to use to transfer them to the server if I am not to use my host's file manager within Cpanel?

    Thanks

  17. Manuel

As you suspect its a problem with the method of file transfer to the server, I've just downloaded FileZilla FTP client so will set up a FTP account on my server, remove the folders Thematic and Sugar Cane from it, then try to re-transfer them via FileZilla FTP client and report back.

  18. Sorry, I should have checked this before I asked you to this and that: You are running version 2.7.1 of WordPress, which has no automatic theme installer (that was what I was talking about when I told you to visit http://bravenewtruths.com/wp-admin/theme-install.php).

Trying out FileZilla is probably a good idea (I guess Cpanel fucks up the themes directory structure), as Sugar Cane is not available through WordPress automatic theme installer and -- in the long run -- you have to get used to FTP transfers anyway.

But keeping WordPress updated at the latest version is important as well.

So say hello to your newly scheduled weekend: Update WordPress to the latest version, delete all themes but the default, and re-upload fresh downloads of Thematic and Sugar Cane. :D

Fortunately, I'm now getting somewhere but still have a problem with Sugar Cane. I've uploaded both Thematic and Sugar Cane to my server via FileZilla FTP. All directories and subdirectories are listed as 755 permissions and at the file level all files are listed as 644 permissions. I've gone back into my wp-admin dashboard and can see that from the preview that Thematic will now activate and render ok. However, although Sugar Cane has been uploaded via FTP rather than Cpanel file manager, wp-admin is still avdising that the Sugar Cane theme is broken as per below:

    Broken Themes

The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.

    Name Description

    Stylesheet is missing.
    Sugar Cane Template is missing.

However, I can see that these files have transferred via FTP to my server. There is the functions.pho file and style.css file. Both have permissions of 644. Any ideas what may be wrong and why Wordpress still considers it broken given these conditions?

Thanks for your help so far because progress is definitely being made.

  20. Sorry! - Just read your last post. I'll consider what you're saying over a coffee. Yes I am running version 2.7.1. Looks like my afternoon's been rescheduled at the very least but thanks for the advice. Great help so far!!

  21. Hi Manuel

Finally, I've managed to get Sugar Cane uploaded.

After downloading Wordpress version 2.8.4, I reloaded Thematic to my server via FTP and this was picked up in my WP Dashboard. However, when I did the same with Sugar Cane Wordpress still advised: Broken Theme. So, I decided rezip the file and upload via Wordpress's own theme installer. Voila! It worked.

Both Thematic and Sugar Cane are on my server.

I now just need to understand what I can do with both Wordpress as a Blog and Content Management System on the Thematic Framework.

Anyway muchas gracias Manuel - thank you to Chris also.

Great support. I'm sure I'll be back.

    Enjoy your weekend.

  22. Shit! Sorry, spoke too soon. That euphoria didn't last long. Wordpress is now advising: The active theme is broken. Reverting to the default theme and

    Broken Themes

The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.

    Name Description
    Sugar Cane Template is missing.

Both the functions.php file and style.css file is on my server. Which file is the Template?

  23. Seems to work now. Sugar Cane is showing up and I can access the files in the subdirectories below Thematic.
