I'd like to add a small sidebar, containing a summary or 'standfirst', positioned alongside the top of each full (or truncated) post on my home page and single post page.

I envisage that the excerpt field would be ideal for this, and I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer with coding, as I'm completely new to PHP (I can get by with CSS).

Alternatively, I guess I could add an h2 or a span to my content and use CSS to position this in the content margin. This might be messy, as I'd need to hide the element on all other pages, or move it out of the first 55 words!

Could anyone comment on the SEO implications of these two alternative approaches?

    Thanks in advance!

  2. Maybe you can consider using a Custom Field and then using e.g. a widget to display it in the sidebar?

    One interesting link includes: http://vandelaydesign.com/blog/wordpress/custom-fields/
although there seems to be custom field widget (compatible with 2.9.2) available already: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/advanced-custom-field-widget/

This means that you would have a unique 'summary' for each post.
