    I'm a designer who is used to building static sites using html and CSS. I've just been familiarising myself with WP and Thematic with the aim of building sites that are editable by the owners.

    Am I right in thinking that if I want to add new divs, then the only way to do this is via the use of hooks?

    What about the main content div. Can you add divs via the html editor?

  2. thematic might be a big jump straight from static sites. a more simple wordpress theme to begin may serve you better.
    in a stripped down theme, you'll be familiar with seeing a more visual DIV layout.
    <div id="header">
    <div id="main">
    and you will also start to learn common wordpres snippets.

    what thematic basically does, (in my own badly presented short words of non-wisdom)...
    wraps chunks of code into sub-sections of code.
    you then get access to those sub-sections via a filter function.

    html editor isn't really your friend here.

    i suggest you play around with a more naked theme to begin
