  1. ok, so i'm new to wordpress and thematic. i was feeling pretty confident tweaking everything, but now i think i'm wasting the whole framework of thematic by customizing everything. so as i go back and try to integrate thematic better, wondering how i utilize thematic' functions.

for instance, most of my pages are custom. before i had this
<h1><?php wp_title(); ?></h1> but then saw thematic already takes care of this in a function. <?php thematic_page_title(); ?>
but problem is, it's not working. can i use thematic functions in my custom page.php or do they need to be used only in functions.php? thanks.

While we are waiting for the experts..

I think unless you want to make major changes you could put your custom function(s) in child theme's functions.php, and if you want to use these function on a certain Page / condition, use the conditional tags, is_page('some-page'), is_category('some-category') etc (see Codex for complete reference).

If you are not satisfy with Thematic standard functions, you can override them in your child theme then add the appropriate hook / filter. Take a look at the Thematic's extension to get a complete idea of its hooks and filters.

  3. thumbs up for almour's post. you can make even major changes to thematic in your child theme through template hierarchy. ie... your child's version of footer.php will take precedence over thematic's footer.php and so on. however, there aren't very many reasons to have to do that when you can just add functions to the thematic_footer hook (and other hooks throughout the theme).

to me it sounds like you don't fully understand child theme's yet... which imo is the power of thematic.
