  1. I am creating a theme for a WordPress MU installation and would like more control over the widget areas.

Specifically, I would like to have a different set of default widgets so it doesn't need to be updated with every installation. Should I alter the Thematic parent, or is there a way to filter this through the child theme functions?

Secondly, only two or three of the widget areas will be needed- and I would like to rename "Primary Aside" to "Sidebar". Again, I know I can just alter the parent theme, but what would be best practice?

  2. Hi,

for renaming / deleting widget areas you need to use the SVN copy.

Take a look into this thread: Something new 'bout widgetized areas

The function thematic_widgets_init() in /thematic/library/extensions/widgets-extensions.php controls the new widget functionality. Take a look at it, but don't touch / change it :)

The default widgets can be controlled by filtering thematic_preset_widgets (at the end of thematic_widgets_init().

Let me know if you need more help / samples.

  3. Hey Chris. I'm not sure why that thread didn't show up in my search, but thanks for pointing it out. That's an incredible amount of great documentation there. I'll download the latest trunk copy and see how it goes.
