  1. I think one thing that would go a long way to moving thematic beyond the developer and courageous newbie crowd would be a central repository for function code snippets.

It seems that many of the things people want to accomplish require the development of functions that require a medium or better level of php programing ability. But many of those function have been developed by people and are just buried in the forums somewhere.

Maybe just a section of the forum where each thread was one tested function. The title describing what the function does and the text being the commented code. If there was enough material then separate sections in the forum could be set up for widgets dealing with the header, sidebar, body structure ect ..

  2. Hi,

    there's a new project starting on January, 1st 2010.

The system will be based on WordPress MU running an entry portal and a number of blogs ('Explaining', 'Hacking', 'Inspiring', ...). The 'Hacking' section will contain step-by-step explained code snippets. All code snippets will be tested and commented plus you can download a child theme with the working code.

Current status: The domain is booked and I'm working on the design.

  4. Chris-

Sounds like an incredible resource. :) I'm certain I could find something to contribute. Let me know when the time comes. I'd love to hear more about it as things develop.

  5. Gene - it'll be an incredible source. Will send you an email with some more details. There will be one blog related to the email that I owe you. :)

  6. It does sound like a great resource. The detail you are describing for the hacking section will be great particularly for the more complicated snippets.

I have found myself cutting and pasting code before, in the end just knowing that it worked or didn't, without much idea did of how or what it did beyond the results.

A blog format has one real drawback, finding specific information. Search tools don't seem to meet this need very well. Differences in wording, tagging and keyword filtering, and questionable search algorithms, make searching in most large blogs and in forums a frustrating process. Most blogs aren't categorized very carefully, tagging systems have not fared well in usability studies, and there is rarely a way to quickly scan a large number of blog post titles.

I think the key in either a blog, forum or other format will be the development of and use/enforcement of a good naming, categorizing, tagging/keyword, convention. Maybe a strict naming and categorization system and a real loose tagging system.

In the limited time I have been working on thematic, I have collected 20 or 30 code snippets (mostly author by gene or chris ;-))saved in text files that looked like I might find them useful in the future.(only used or tried about 3 or 4 so far).

Anyway thanks for the effort you have put into this framework. I hope to see alot more child theme's based on thematic being used throughout the blogging community.
