  1. It would be great not only to have Widgets to be published in the sidebar, but also the contents of custom_fields. If there was a predefined list of custom fields like eg.

    • above_primary_aside
    • below_primary_aside
    • above_secondary_aside
    • below_secondary_aside

and so on, one could display information related to articles or pages in the sidebar without having to hack around the source code or any knowledge of php (I have functions.php in my mind). Until now, I can only work with the widget_logic-plugin, but when you reach the 20-widgets-mark in primary aside, things start to look strange...

    Good idea? Bad idea?

  2. I'm not a total fan of the - global sidebar / widget logic - approach because it can lead to an indecipherable widget area in the admin. I guess at a point, it begs the question is a widget the best solution for presenting this information.
Custom fields would work well when information doesn't need the default treatment of the widget area but I can't see how this would save the child theme user from getting their hands dirty. The uses and potential markup / styling of custom fields are too broad. The child theme user would still have to have knowledge of php and code their functions.php to add the styling pertinent to their individual use of the custom fields.

  3. .. in addition .. we provide an action hook above primary, one between primary and secondary, and one below secondary. These can be used to integrate a custom field based functionality.
