I continue to get a 404 error when I change the permalinks - I've tried changing them manually in the setting using the proper tags, I've tried changing them with plugins - the link in wordpress does change but when I click to "view" the page I get a 404 error.

Can permalinks be changed in the functions.php?

  2. did you try /%postname%/ or /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/ ??

is wordpress installed in your root directory? or s subfolder? the only thing i can think of to change permalinks from your theme's functions would just be using update_option which should accomplish the same thing as doing it manually.

Thank you, yes, I did try those tags and still received the 404 error. Wordpress is in a subdirectory. I'm not completely sure how to write functions, but I'll give that a try!

  4. i think your issue somehow relates to the fact that you are in a subfolder.

what about your general settings? do you have site.com/blog as the place where your WP install is located?

do the unpretty permalinks work? do you have a link to your site? what is the name of wordpress's subdirectory? how do you still have access to your backend? usually when you break the permalinks you can't login to your dash either.

not sure this is really relevent, but if you wanted to have your blog be the site.com root while WP is in a subdirectory you could do this:

  5. Hi Susan, do you need to use an index.php/something on the url by default?

If so I've seen that before and it may be a server specific issue...

    just my 2 cents...
