I have been reading up posts on Thematic forum about using the Wordpress 3.0 menu, and like everybody who has had headaches with styling menus, am excited about the possibility!

So, i would like to know whats the final word on doing it?

-Theorib- gives us a function here:
    http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/a-better-way-to-use-the-new-menu-in-wordpress-30-final-version

but -em hr- at the end cancels out the adding menu option.

-justin tadlock- give pretty much the same option in his blog:
    http://justintadlock.com/archives/2010/06/01/goodbye-headaches-hello-menus

and finally, the master -Chris- puts his version here:
    http://programming.thematic4you.com/2010/03/how-to-test-wp_nav_menu-with-thematic/

but all these posts are 2-3 months old.

So whats the final word and way on doing this guyz?

  2. in the forum post you cite, Gene doesn't cancel out ALL the code, just this particular line:

// We declare that our theme supports wp_nav_menu()
    add_theme_support( 'nav-menus' );

for me everything works just find w/o it. so you could use either of the 2 code suggestions therein depending on whether you were going w/ a single menu (gene's filter function) or multiple menus.

@helga -- I must say that of all things in Thematic, its the menu that always gives me the crippers. Can't seem to find the colors and styling, even with firebug many times!! so I thought this new menu function might just ease out things, and save time. I'll try out the above and see what works. Thanks

  4. Hi there, I wonder if a sticky could be put on the forum on this topic? There are so many posts about the custom menu in WP 3.0 that there is conflicting and outdated information. I can sympathise with @him about this and admit that I find things confusing.

For instance the custom menu works fine for me in a child theme without adding any code to functions.php using Thematic 0.9.7.5 from trunk.

That might be my "last word" on the issue but I'm guessing that there may be caveats to that and I don't have the expertise to give a definitive answer.

  5. @him - i doubt 3.0 menu will save you time on styling as it uses the exact same CSS. there is a post called 'solving the suckerfish nightmare' somewhere that does a nice job of breaking the menu css down and commenting it.

    found it: http://forums.themeshaper.com/topic/solving-the-superfish-nightmare

@perryb - agreed. it isn't that the info isn't available. but i've noted the search function here is pretty dismal. i get annoyed seeing the same question repeated, but i also realize that you almost can't find pertinent posts via search. i have some code that i could post. i was working on expanding the CSS too..... maybe if i get some spare time.
