with WP's new menu thingie, how will this change/affect Thematic's menu?
I'm currently using a functions.php thing to sort the menu the way I'd like. Will I be able to remove this under WP3? I know it isn't out yet but I figure I won't be the only one curious about the changes :D

  2. Hi xxxevilgrinxxx,

I don't think it will change it at all. Somewhere around here Chris chimed in that that wouldn't be immediately available to Thematic but he expected to see it available in child themes.

We have covered how to alter the main nav of thematic many times here and adding the WP 3.0 menu function is just as easy as all the other mods.

I don't see you one could change the default menu function of Thematic without breaking the nav of older child themes. That's not to say it couldn't be done with backwards compatibility. But why bother when the modification is easily coded.

  3. Gene - you're absolutely right about changing the menu and breaking the child themes.

    xxxevilgrinxxx -

My first statement ('No') was based on a very early version of the new menu that did not create a default menu. The current version will create one.

As soon as the WP 3.0 moves to beta status, we should be able to present some code to implement the new menu to a child theme. But even this will be for internal use only as long as WP 3.0 is not final.

Following Ptah and his last statement on his blog, I cannot recommend to implement the new functionality into a public child theme or to discuss the integration.

I can guarantee that we will have at least a best practice guide for you as soon as WP 3.0 is released.

  4. thank you, Chris!

It would of course be used through a child theme (Power Blog in this case). I'll keep following WP3 development until it comes out and look forward to seeing the results then :D

    Hi Gene,

Above you say "We have covered how to alter the main nav of thematic many times here and adding the WP 3.0 menu function is just as easy as all the other mods."

Could you point me to one of these examples? I had hard-coded the header navigation but have now installed WP 3.0 beta2 and would like to utilize the WP menus for the main and secondary navs. I've done searches in the forums and documentation but can't locate anything, and since I barely know a function from a filter I definitely need an example. ;)

    Thanks for any pointers...

Now that WP3 is in beta 2 stage, is there an example as to how to use the menu builder in a child theme?

  7. Also looking forward the update to Thematic that will come with the Wordpress 3 release. That custom menu feature seems powerful.
