Is it possible to have a mixture a of column layouts as you go down the page?

So top of the page will have full width where the banner will go.

Below you can have a 2 column where can put widgets and stuff

Below that have a 3 column layout for other things.

Im pretty sure that he is using a custom layout. added area belowheader or above_content. also the main content area is not using a regular thematic layout. it is also a custom layout. and the footer appears to be just a thematic widgetized area with widgets.

If it uses a full width template, how do I get those 2 column sections?

Can you give me any pointers on how to get started with a similar custom layout? Sorry if this is basic stuff!

Also how do I get the thematic widgetized area?

Still looking for an efficient solution to this.

Lets take this as an example - http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/

Would you say thats a 2 column or 1 column layout?

I you look at the section "Gain Elasticity and Flexibility...", the image on the left, should I be creating a separate Page template to put that image beside the text or can I do it within the Page editor in WP-admin?

Well I have used Ian's Powerblog theme as a basis for adding this widget areas.

    Think that should do it.
