  1. In the Thematic theme (which is awsome, by the way) I'm trying to get rid of all the stuff in the right side column (search field, pages section, blogroll section, etc.) to arrive at a super simple one column layout.

How do I do that? I'm new to Wordpress, so appologies if this is a really stupid question.

  2. Hey,

take a look at one of my code snippets: How to remove the sidebar from a certain page?.

You need to remove the if-else- structure and just do a return: False; .. this will remove the sidebar on your whole blog.

On the CSS stuff remove the body.slug-forum .. that's it.

    Cheers,

    Chris

  3. Thanks a lot, Chris, that was really helpful. I don't fully understand how the theme and child theme stuff works, but that will improve, I hope.

    Hi Chris,

I've been looking into the original sample code and tried to get it working with is_front_page(), but no matter what i do, the sidebar keeps on showing? So i must be doing something wrong, but the code is fairly straight-forward. Do you have any clues i should look at?

    Cheers,
    Tony

is_front_page() seems to be the culprit. the code works on is_home() whenever i hit my posts page. Odd thing is: is_page('Home') doesn't work either. Maybe my local dev configuration is screwed up. Will try on a pre-production site tomorrow (when my head is a bit clearer than it is now ).

could you please check the behavior against the definition of the Conditional Tags?!

    Chris,

i just did. No go. Have a template setup for a 'home' page. Defined it in my wordpress settings and that works, but is_front_page() will not return true when i hit my 'home'.
I have no idea how to setup debugging on this machine at the moment. So for now i'm opting to the easy way and that is customizing the template for my 'home'.

    Cheers,

    Chris,

Is there a way to have certain sidebar/widget areas show up on some pages and not others?

This method seems to cancel them all out on all but one page.

ie, get the primary-aside sidebar to show up on the home page and no others
but to also get the secondary-aside to show up on page 3 but not any of the others.

    Thanks,
    Aaron
