Whilst relatively comfortable with HTML and CSS I am new to WordPress, CMSs in general, PHP, etc (and Thematic, obviously). I have looked through all the CSS files that Thematic includes, and have a pretty good understanding of how they fit together. But everything else is still a mystery at the moment.

    So two general queries:

    1. Is Thematic as good a place as any to dip one's toe into WP? Or am I best trying to come to grips with WP before trying to get my head around what Thematic offers? Or to ask the question another way is learning to modify a Thematic child theme any more difficult or easy than learning to modify a regular theme?

    2. Is there a source of information/documentation that would serve as a good leap off point for somebody in my situation (I'm what I might classify a relatively intelligent and methodical noob)? At the moment what I have come across on this site has been - understandably - directed at people who are relatively familiar with both WP and Thematic, and what I've found elsewhere on the web has been almost uniformly facile. I suspect A Guide To Thematic is intended to eventually become what I am looking for, but obviously it isn't there yet.

    Thanks for any advice,
    Michael

  2. Hey Michael,

sorry for this delay .. Thematic is indeed a good way to start. Create a local blog with the standard child theme and start to work on the CSS. Play around with posts, pages, categories and so on. You might want to look into one these Thematic Child Themes.

For anything else use the ThemeShaper Forums, the Customization Guide for Thematic and my Code Snippets Project.

I know that the Customization Guide and the Code Snippets Project have the status 'Road Works Ahead' but we're doing our best to change this status as soon as possible. Anyway .. while we are working on it you're still able to ask for help here in the forums.

    Cheers,

    Chris

    Hey Chris,

Just had a poke at your Code Snippets Project and bookmarked it immediately. It seems like it's going to be pitched at my level - whilst I have no idea about PHP at the moment your comments within the code at least meant I understood what each line was doing, even if I don't yet understand the syntax.

Thanks (I suspect this isn't the last you'll hear from me!)
