(This is particularly aimed at Ian Stewart; also open to anyone in-the-know.)

I've been reading 'CSS Mastery' by Andy Budd.
-great book, learning alot. My goal has been to learn html and CSS, then php.

Now I'm ready to learn the mechanics of wordpress, theme templates & php...
...not just cut and paste code, but actually understand the php language.

Know of an outstanding, one-source book?

  2. Hey tod7,

I'm a total novice myself and bought "HTML, XHTML, and CSS All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies"

Though the title doesn't says, it will teach you fundamentals of javascript, php and even mySQL.

    http://www.amazon.com/HTML-XHTML-Reference-Dummies-Computer/dp/0470186275/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1261413377&sr=8-1

It surely helped and it's fun reading...

  3. I have a little programming experience, so if you know your way around basic programming methodology and need to learn detailed syntax I like O'Reilly PHP 5. I cover more than just web application, and you go cover to cover, you'll definitely be well beyond a copy paster. Once you have the basics, you can use more reference oriented books like "cook books" which will give you more advanced and clean coding examples.
