  1. I've made some big updates to the Thematic Options Theme I released a few months ago. You can now select your layout (2-col, 3-col, etc), use the ajax image uploader, and set the footer text. There's also a bunch of other minor improvements.

For people who haven't seen the theme yet, there's detailed instructions for how to add your own theme options for child themes.

I'd appreciate people's feedback on it. I'm also wondering if people would rather have this as a plug-in, or if I should keep it as is.

  2. Devin, looks great! I would definitely prefer it as is. I can't see any advantage to it being a plugin.

Everyone else, I just built a theme based on Devin's Child Options theme, will be doing so the next time I make a thematic child theme and would definitely reecommend it to anyone trying to wrap her head around child themes.

I second helgatheviking. It makes for a GREAT starting point for a child theme, and very easy to work your design into. I cant help but get that "grand child theme" feeling if there was to be another layer ontop or beside thematic.

    Very nice work Devin.

How does this affect speed and performance? generating options dynamically like this i mean?

  6. The options are all stored in an array. I honestly don't know how it affects performance, but since most plugins/themes have some options and conditional statements I'm guessing it isn't much overhead. Anyone know?

  7. don't really know... but seems to me that if you are making a call to your DB for each option value that might be some overhead, but if you make the call once and then just pull the value out of the resulting array that doesn't seem so bad. still haven't looked really closely, but i'm glad you got everything into 1 array. i definitely think that is better than creating a ton of entries in the DB... that way can lead to lots of DB bloat if you change themes a couple of times.

  9. I dig it. Checking it out now. Imho the options should be stored in a single array so they only take up one row in the options table. Makes for a less cluttered db and easy removal. Needs to be secured with nonces. I'll try and wrap my head around Git and contribute. Thanks for sharing.

  12. It would be great to add options for common functions.php mods we do like adding the home to the menu, loading CSS on specific pages, etc

I will try to get on git tonight and contribute some kind of base for this
