  1. Hi, I'm considering Thematic as a starter theme for my client projects. However, I have a few questions to help me with my decision:

    1. Can I customize Thematic directly (via functions.php) instead of a child theme? I know all the arguments for child themes, but I think my clients will get confused why there's an extra Thematic theme in their WP dashboard.

    2. Some clients require theme options. I see a few tutorials for theme options with Thematic but it seems they also require hacking Thematic's core files. If that's the case, what are the implications for core theme upgrades?

    Thanks in advance :)

  2. for 1. i don't actually know if you can edit the thematic from its functions.php file. My guess is you'd have to go into each function and make the tweaks you want. Have you tried explaining to your clients that Thematic is like the frame of a house? Or just tell them that it NEEDS to be there so Don't Touch! Or you could say it saves you time (and therefore them money) since you don't need to start from scratch... so again, No Touching! i know this isn't the most helpful, but i think you'd be better off explaining to your client what it is and why it is there. That's what I do anyway.

for 2. Devin wrote what I consider to be the definitive post on theme options:

it is all contained w/in the child theme and so i dont think there is any core hacking.

  3. Hi Helga! Thanks for the answers. Ok I'll give it a try (your suggestion & the theme options tutorial) and see how it goes.
