    After searching, I'm not finding anything about this:

    How do I utilize the Custom Menu function? I'm bringing in a new/different commerce plugin and I want many of the products available in the main menu. Custom Menus should suffice, but not sure how to activate it.

    Thanks.

    Pretty sure activation is built into the latest thematic. You'll need to head to Appearance > Menus and create a menu in the Name Menu box - call it 'Main' for example & click on create menu.

    The 'Theme Locations' box should appear with a "Your theme supports 1 menu. Select which menu you would like to use." message.

    Select 'Main' from the drop down and save. You should be set to go.

  3. custom menus are default in the latest thematic, wp_page_menu is used only when a custom menu is not selected for the "primary" location.

    latest stable version of thematic:

    I'm having a similar problem. I'm developing a child theme based on 0.9.7.7. I've created a custom menu and added a custom menu widget to the primary sidebar, but the menu isn't showing up. In fact, there's no HTML generated at all for that menu.

  5. see my previous above post about using the latest version of thematic.

    then read my sticky manual on menus:

    OK. I downloaded the development version and installed it. The Custom Menu widget is still not working.

    I read through your sticky manual on menus. So, are you telling me that the Custom Menu widget does not work and that I have to this with functions?

  7. Ok, I admit I might have skipped over your question about the menu widget and thought you were having regular menu issues. however, the custom menu widget is a WP widget and NOT a thematic widget, so that part is at least independent of the thematic version you are using.... tho i still rep version 0.9.8 for fixing a lot of bugs from 0.9.7.7.

    anyway, i just tested this and all my menu widget show up just fine, so it must be something else. do you have heavy caching happening on your site? is it being hidden somehow w/ CSS? do you have a link to your site?

    Sorry about not replying to this sooner.

    The site is at redesign.cbpmagazine.com. There's no caching going on. At least I don't have a caching plugin. I don't think there's any hiding going on, either. There's no HTML at all in the primary aside.

    It would be nice to get this to work, but I'm not going to let this hold me up. If worse comes to worse, I'll just use a text widget.

  9. there is indeed some HTML in the primary aside, it would seem you have a text widget. is the menu widget in the primary aside on the backend? if so, then perhaps drag it out of the container and then drag it back. that will trick WP into re-saving the active widgets.

    <ul class="xoxo">
    <li id="text-8" class="widgetcontainer widget_text">
    <div class="textwidget"><img src="/wp-content/themes/cbpmag/images/products.gif">
    </div>
    </li>
    </ul>

    I added that image after I posted that last reply. Sorry.

    I have dragged that custom menu widget in and out of the container several times before, and just did it again, but It's still not working.

    Can I uninstall and then perhaps re-install that widget?

    I really feel bad about taking up so much of your time.

    Here's another data point. I created a couple of other pages, and that custom menu shows up on those pages! It's still not showing up on the home page,though. Is there some reason it wouldn't show up on the home page?

  12. that widget is part of WP core so you cannot uninstall it. update to WP 3.2.1 and try disabling all of your plugins. i'm out of ideas since i cannot reproduce this error.

    Well, I was up until 2am last night beating on this, and I finally fixed it.

    What I was doing is accessing a second database for some data, and that's what was breaking the custom menus. I moved the entire WP installation to the second database, and now all is well. I probably could have made it work somehow even with accessing two databases, but it seemed easier just to have it all run from a single database.

    Thanks again for all your help.

  14. multiple DBs? sounds like a headache for sure. glad you sorted it out.

    Well, it really shouldn't have been, I don't think. What I'm doing is re-designing a site that used a custom content management system. Instead of trying to convert all the current content to WP posts, I planned on just using it as-is. Anyway, I'm all squared away now.

    What tipped me off to the problem is that I installed the Menus Plus plugin, and it actually generated a db error on the home page where the custom menu was to go. WP didn't generate any kind of error message; it just didn't display the menu.

  16. weird. don't know if this would have helped, but you can turn debug mode on in WP by editing your wp-config.php file.

    define('WP_DEBUG', true);

    or to turn it on only when you want it you add this:

    if ( isset($_GET['debug']) && $_GET['debug'] == 'debug')
      define('WP_DEBUG', true);

    and then debug mode only loads when you visit your site.com/?debug=debug

    since you have solved your dilemma don't forget to mark as resolved
