  1. I really like the Simple Video Embedder for its ease of use... you had 1 tempalte tag and it has a super easy metabox on each post page, but it has one shortcoming: I can't specify what size i'd like the video to be in the template. for instance on the blog i might want to show the video at 400x300 and on the single page or on a specific template i might want it to be 600x450. i actually modded the old version of SVE to take parameters, but would really prefer NOT to mod plugins so i dont have to worry about keeping them up-to-date. i already have enough on my plate w/ the theme itself!

    so what are you using?

  2. also- does anyone have any experience w/ using an HTML5 video player in wordpress? I know youtube's api now has a chromeless player w/o their standard (and ugly) control, but the documentation is pretty bad.

It depends on the what format your videos are (FLV, MP4, WMV, Quicktime, etc.)
I'm near finishing up on a site with several videos and had favorable success during testing with Longtail's JW Player, Viper's Video Tags, FV WordPress Flowplayer, and Flowplayer for WordPress. We wanted a little more control over some aspects of the players appearance, and opted for an offsite solution. We found two, Flowplayer and Adobe Flash Media Playback. While the Flowplayer player is very customizable, we found that the Adobe Media Player offered enough options and was dead simple to install.

In both cases, the player is hosted by their CDN, and with the Adobe all that's necessary is to copy the generated code and paste it into a page. Flowplayer is also very good, but required a little more effort to set the player up. Adobe and it's simplicity is perfect for my client who is not terribly versed in web page building or Wordpress.

We looked at HTML5, but decided not to go that route since it's still in development, and his site will have a client base that's pretty diverse. Perhaps down the road a bit, who knows...

If you want to have a look at the Adobe player output, send me an e-mail to (remove the NOSPAM). Make sure you include your handle, helgatheviking, somewhere in your message so I know it's you. The site is still located on my own server space while I tidy things up before loading to the client's site.

[EDIT] Forgot to mention that we are using Flash wrapped MP4's with a Quicktime fallback for iPhone and some Apple users.

  4. hey thanks for the great reply, i thought this thread had died. i will email you. for the moment i have modded simple video embedder again... to accept a width parameter and to appear on pages and certain custom post types. mostly i anticipate loading youtube videos so a lot of the cooler players i have looked at don't help much in that regard.

Yeah, Flash Media Playback doesn't do YouTube when I test it. Vipers Video Quicktags plugin for Wordpress does a nice job with YouTube and some others like it. Might give that one a try - installs easily and cleans up after itself if you decide to get rid of it.

    Just a thought....

  6. I use Vipers Video Quicktags too.. very useful if you have a lot of accounts when uploading vids. And it uses shortcode on your posts.

  7. @oakview- i think you are absolutely right that it depends on the type of video. i love the custom controls and the general look of some of the newer players, but i had to realize that for the site i am building right now..... my friend can't afford hosting for vids so everything will need to be on youtube. and while their controls might be ugly and non-customizable, youtube might also be a help w/ traffic... that is if people are into learning about infectious diseases. when i get done with my project maybe i will look again at youtube's new chromeless player. or maybe i could just learn to be content w/ the options that are currently available.
