I'm just starting with wordpress. I'k okay with html, but no almost nothing about php, though I plan on learning more.

I really like simple design. As an example is what I'm shooting for. Most wordpress themes are far more complex. What I'd like is as basic a template as possible, as easy to understand as possible, for me to slowly change into what I want (as I slowly learn more about wordpress, php, etc.)

It looks like Toolbox and Shape both fit the bill, and I have no idea which woud be better for me to start with and slowly change. If anyone can help guide a newbie and tell me which is better for what I want I'd be very thankful :)

One more thought, if there's a better starting place than the two themes I mentioned feel free to point me towards them :)

  3. obviously since you are in a Thematic forum we're a little biased towards that. it is pretty minimalistic, but i think you could cut it down further to match textism. There is a serious learning curve, but once you get beyond it (or more correctly over the worst of it) thematic is very powerful and flexible.

  4. I started out with the Thematic Theme. I do have a few years of experience with HTML/CSS, but I'm still a "newbie" when it comes to the PHP. It is easy once you understand it though, it is a bit overwhelming at first so don't let it scare you off.

My advice would be to install a "local" site on your computer, then upload a couple of the themes, make a child theme for each one, edit it and determine which one you like more. Plus you will learn ALLOT as you go. With the site being locally hosted you will not have to worry about messing up you "live" site.
