  1. Hi all, Firstly I'm not a WordPress or php programmer. So I need any instructions to include WHICH FILE the code is to be added to. Thanks. :)

I am using the child theme Gallery with Thematic.

I simply want to add an excerpt to the bottom of each thumbnail on the home (index.php) for reader benefit and SEO reasons. Actually it would be great to add excerpts to any page where the thubnails are shown (categories, tags etc).

I've read several posts about exceprts but the confusing thing no-one mentions which files should be edited (eg Stylesheet or Theme Functions or Main Index Template etc).

I also have installed the plugin Advanced Excerpts if that is of any help.

How do I get the excerpts to show? And maybe limit them to X characters (so the gallery looks well formated and even) with a Read More link?

  2. having not used Gallery, I can't say specifically. excerpts are default in thematic on tag, category, archive, and author pages... and can easily be set to do so on the home page as well. so the Gallery Theme must be filtering or overriding the thematic_content() function. you'll have to look in its functions.php to see what is happening.

I don't know what tutorials you've read on child theming...

is the one i usually suggest. but if after reading the above tutorial (i don't mean to sound like a jerk) someone still has to tell you that changes to PHP code go in function.PHP and changes to CSS go in style.CSS then you probably shouldn't be messing around with the code anyway. and you never mess w/ the Thematic templates. (there may be some in Gallery... again I just don't know)

    good luck.
