Hi everyone I'm a little confused about the thematic child themes - is it possible to use one of the free wordpress themes (like Mistique or another of the popular free themes) as a child theme in thematic?

In other words, can I download a theme from the theme directory and use it with thematic?

My motivation is wanting lots of choice in the look of the site but not wanting to create my own child theme.

    All the best.

  2. No the other themes are their own stand-alone themes. You do not need Thematic to run Mistique or most free themes. You only need Thematic when using a theme that was specifically built as a child theme of thematic (such as Gallery, or Commune). Thematic is a theme framework, and I find it helpful to think of it like the frame of a house.. with a child theme being something like the outer shell and window dressing. Mistique, Atahualpa, Suffusion (which has quite a few theme customizations in the dashboard)... all have their own frames and so don't use Thematic.

That said, you can base a child theme of your own off of any theme.

    Thanks so much.

To be clear - themes like Mistique are based on different frames and won't fit onto the thematic house?

What I'm hoping for is a way to combine the thematic framework with some of the pretty third party themes out there.

  4. That's right. Unless it is specifically a child of Thematic it won't play w/ thematic. I am sure if you were diligent enough you could create a child theme of thematic that looked like mistique..... a sort of frankentheme. I am just not sure at all why you'd want to.
