  1. Hello there,

I really suck at coding and I literally have no experience in creating Wordpress themes. I followed the guide on how to create a Thematic child theme and I did it. Next it says to make a background I have to use CSS does that mean I enter the code in my styles.css or functions.php and how do I enter the code?

EDIT: Can someone also tell me a link or video to a step by step tutorial. Someone gave me a tutorial but it was extremely brief and didn't explain anything. I am looking for a very long and detailed tutorial that explains Wordpress themes for dummies.

searching "thematic child theme tutorial" also reveals this one which looks good:

come on dude, you enter CSS in style.CSS. and PHP (tho also something HTML) goes in your functions.PHP this is atleast mentioned in the above tut

  3. Thanks but those tuts are extremely brief.. I'm looking for a step by step tutorial that can also help me in the future. I know I must sound like a total idiot right now and you are right.. i am a total idiot when it comes to Wordpress themes I literally know nothing. It's as if your trying to explain what a keyboard does to me...

  4. there is no "step-by-step" tutorial as far as i know. at least not one w/ the depth it sounds like you are looking for. who would write one "end all, be all tutorial" b/c every single site/theme is different? there are plenty of tutorials out there, it is a matter of piecing together the parts you want.

you have to start w/ the very basic building blocks. then you say "gee i really like how ABC site does XYZ effect" and then you proceed to view the source code, inspect it w/ firebug and if that doesn't tell you then google how that is done and finally implement it into your theme. that also leads you to asking specific questions here that people can actually help you with.

just out of curiosity, why are you trying to learn wordpress design? i mean, i'm all for people learning, and if you want to be a coder... hey cool, but if you literally know nothing.... you could be banging your head into a lot of walls when you'd be better off hiring someone to do it.

  5. Well actually I am not looking to be a coder and design themes on a daily basis. I just want to create one simple theme (and not find one on wordpress themes) for this website I am looking to create a theme for this..

  6. I'm sincerely not trying to sound patronizing...
But, it sounds to me like you need to take the journey down the HTML and CSS road.

If you have no experience in these languages, buy a book and hit the keys! It's a very exciting journey. I've spent years learning about CSS and every day something new and exciting comes into view.

Once you have a strong understanding of these, (and ideally a solid foundation in PHP which I lack...), then you will be better armed to tackle WordPress.

...I just noticed you said you're NOT intersted in being a coder. But my message stands.
